According to Assistant Professor of Law at Washington and Lee University School of Law Brandon Hasbrouck, the best way for White Americans to make up injustices meaded out to Black Americans is to let Black votes count twice.
This far fetched plan was possessed in an opinion piece published by The Nation where Hasbrouck claims that “Black votes in this country are worth less than white votes.”
While the very nature of voting seems to fly in the face of the good professor’s theory, his mindset seems especially ludicrous, given the backdrop of election fraud, in favor of the candidates most deeply supported by Black Americans today.
But since you’re already here, let’s listen to the law professor’s case, shall we?
“One core problem is the Electoral College,” Hasbrouck said. “Wyoming, which has just 580,000 residents and is 93 percent white, gets three electors because of its two senators and one representative in the House.
“By comparison, Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District—which includes Atlanta, has 710,000 residents, and is 58 percent Black—has no dedicated electors or senators and can only occasionally overcome the mostly white and conservative votes from elsewhere in the state. This devaluation of Black votes allows our political system to ignore Black lives, and the consequences are devastating. Unequal representation has led to unequal health care outcomes, which the Covid-19 pandemic has only worsened. Without sufficient voting power, Black communities receive substandard education, and politicians are free to appoint judges who sanction mass incarceration, abusive policing, and electoral disenfranchisement.
“This is all by design. The Constitution’s framers set up the Electoral College to protect the interests of slave states. Along with the Senate, the Electoral College was critical in the endurance of slavery and its continuation by other means. Abolishing this system would mean that ballots cast by Black voters—or any voters, for that matter—would count the same.”
While it appears that Hasbrouck is regurgitating some of the most popular hits of the Black Lives Matter organization and the Social Justice Warriors’ cause, it’s worth noting that a) he’s using some questionable sources (such as Al Jazeera) and he’s also making the core mistake of placing the blame for many ills away from the individual and giving them to the society at large.
While that technique in logical misdirection can seem like a quick path to victory, the problem with it is that if anyone breaks the mold and doesn’t fall into the same traps that you’re pointing out, the entire argument is turned on its ear.
Case in point: Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson, possibly the foremost neonatal neurosurgeon in the world, claims to have been educated with a library card. Not looking for a brainiac as an example?
Let me tell you about a kid from East Texas who took his high school team to state over and over and then made millions in the NFL by the name of Dez Bryant.
Bryant’s mother was a 15-year-old who eventually became a drug dealer. He was taken from her and taken in by a teacher from school and became the kind of athlete that was so great, one commentator said that the rules of the NFL couldn’t accommodate his athleticism.
However, Hasbrouck believes that his voting plan will make all the difference.
“Vote reparations would create possibilities to build what W.E.B. Du Bois called ‘abolition democracy,’ or the practice of achieving a racially just society. Abolition democracy invites us to engage with abolition not as a finite goal but as a radical process of challenging injustices wherever and in whatever form they might appear. Vote reparations would empower us to replace oppressive institutions with life-affirming structures of economic, social, and political equality. And if our elected representatives did not prioritize this transformational work, we could vote them out.
“Because white votes currently count more than Black ones, double-counting Black votes would restore electoral balance. Vote reparations would be a giant step toward remedying our nation’s long history of denying and devaluing Black votes. To address systemic racism, we must transform how we choose our government. Even if vote reparations aren’t instituted, Black voters will keep tirelessly dragging our states toward a more perfect union. But just imagine our country if our votes counted twice.”
The problem with the left is that they seem to think that in order to make things fair, they need to take something from one person and give it to another. That’s still unfair. Two wrongs won’t make a write, they’ll just make someone else wrong.
The kind of authoritarian being touted by the left is an unforgiving iron-fisted rule that will lead to communism, and as one political commentator put it, “remember kiddos, you can vote yourself into communism, but you can’t vote yourself out of it.”
But sure, let’s get rid of the Electoral College because some people who believe that today, they’re felling the wrongs of 150 years ago and they’ll burn buildings to the ground to prove their point. Let’s reward bad behavior by giving them two votes each. That will definitely work out well.
