Governor Ron DeSantis’ Education Department decided to finally put the Broward County School Board on full notice. They voted 8-1 to keep the mask mandates in place. The Broward County School Board was responsible for defying these orders, as Governor DeSantis was responsible for putting them into place. Now, DeSantis is striking back the best he can.
He is threatening to withhold salaries until the school board decides to follow the necessary orders:
“With respect to enforcing any financial consequences for non-compliance of state law regarding these rules and ultimately the rights of parents to make decisions about their children’s education and health care decisions, it would be the goal of the State Board of Education to narrowly tailor any financial consequences to the offense committed. For example, the State Board of Education could move to withhold the salary of the district superintendent or school board members, as a narrowly tailored means to address the decision-makers who led to the violation of law,” he said.
DeSantis’ Education Department told the Broward County School Board issued another warning on Tuesday night, letting the Broward County School Board know that they have until Friday to get with the program or start risking their paychecks. Fox News has more on this developing story:
“The Florida Department of Education threatened to withhold the salaries of the Broward County superintendent and the members of the school board after the board voted to defy Governor Ron DeSantis’ executive order barring mask mandates in schools.
“This letter is sent to express my grave concern regarding your district’s significant neglect in response to the recently adopted Emergency Rule,” Richard Corcoran, the DOE commissioner, wrote in a letter to the superintendent and chair of the school board. The order, which Florida Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees issued on August 6, lays out clear “expectations for ensuring that any mandated mask policies imposed by a district or school ‘must allow for a parent or legal guardian of the student to opt-out the student from wearing a face-covering or mask.’”
Corcoran announced that he would initiate an investigation, “demanding that you provide a written response by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 13.” Depending on the results of the investigation, “I may recommend to the State Board of Education that the Department withhold funds in an amount equal to the salaries for the Superintendent and all the members of the School Board,” he warned.”
There is a clear misunderstanding taking place here and we are tired of seeing it. Governor DeSantis simply wants to give the parents their own choice here. Why shouldn’t they be able to make their own common sense decisions during a time like this? We have tried to live under the mandates and they have only seemed to make things worse.
However, we suspect that there is going to be a lengthy battle taking place over this decision. The progressives are never going to let this go because they are never willing to let anyone else make their own choices. They want to impose their standards on others, as it is easier than admitting that they may not know everything.
This is also about their never ending crusade to make Governor DeSantis look bad. They do not care what lengths they have to go to. They (rightfully) recognize him as a real threat to ascend to the presidency. By making him look bad now, they can cut him off at the legs and maybe spare themselves the annoyance of having to watch another Republican president fix the mess that their precious Biden and Obama have made.
Make no mistake, these two bumbling charlatans have made mistake after mistake. Now, we wait until Biden decides to call in the Feds and make DeSantis stand down. That’s exactly where this is headed and we already have our popcorn ready. Hopefully, common sense is able to prevail before it is too late.
