By now, you know that prostates can cause several health problems as you age. And while some, such as the urge to urinate, often are annoying, others are downright dangerous, such as prostate cancer.

Basically, all prostate problems start when the gland begins to swell, as is common with age. In some instances, the prostate may simply become enlarged. In others, it may also become infected, causing additional swelling, pain while urinating, blood in the urine, and even pain and stiffness in your lower back, hips, or upper thighs.

Even for those with non-life-threatening prostates, the results can be disastrous to your life. Imagine pretty much wetting your pants in public, maybe during an important business meeting, for no other reason than because your prostate made it happen.

Luckily, there are several ways you can ensure that your prostate stays healthy and non-threatening, whether those threats are to your life or just your time spent in the bathroom.

For starters, you might want to limit the number of foods in your diet that contain lots of fat. This is probably a good idea for anyone trying to remain healthy anyway.

In fact, maintaining a healthy diet is one of the surest ways to keep your prostate healthy. Eating plenty of fruits and veggies, particularly green and leafy ones, is always a good idea. Choosing whole grains in bread is also a wise choice.

However, you can add a couple of supplements to your diet to help improve prostate health. Some have even been known to actually shrink prostate size over time. Just be sure to choose natural options, as these have a smaller chance of causing side effects and inadvertently adding to your health concerns.
