As temperatures soar across the Golden State, local farmers are battling against time to salvage their harvests from the scorching heat. In the heartland of America’s agricultural hub – the Central Valley – growers are forced to adapt to unprecedented conditions, lest they risk devastating financial losses.
At family-owned institution ‘The Fruit Bowl,’ Manager Andrew Lucchetti shared his team’s strategy to combat Mother Nature’s wrath. “She’s just spraying some water on the vegetables to keep them hydrated,” he explained, highlighting an essential step towards preserving freshness amidst sweltering conditions.
To further mitigate damage, Lucchetti revealed another crucial adjustment made by his farm: altering harvesting schedules to coincide with cooler periods. This proactive approach ensures optimal yields while safeguarding precious resources.
Established in 1947, ‘The Fruit Bowl’ boasts an impressive array of seasonal fruits and veggies sourced directly from nearby fields. Despite this bounty, Lucchetti candidly acknowledged the harsh realities faced daily. “It’s just part of the game. You have to pick what you have that’s good quality and keep it irrigated so that it can maintain, but yeah, the heat will turn things quickly.”
In recent years, climate-driven crop failures have skyrocketed nationwide; according to reports, weather-related claims under crop insurance policies surged by a staggering 1000% between 2001-2022. As summer intensifies its grip, farms must prioritize innovative methods to stay ahead of the curve.
