A surfing legend and Hollywood actor who had legions of fans in Hawaii has met a tragic end. Tamayo Perry, known for roles in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and other films and TV shows, was bumped off his surfboard and then killed by a shark in the waters off Oahu.
The incident happened around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday near Goat Island. Other surfers found Perry’s body in the water shortly after the attack. He was missing one arm and one leg when they found him.
When another surfer saw the attack, he called 911 and emergency responders arrived quickly. Lifeguards on jet skis grabbed him and brought him to shore. Even though they got him out of the water within minutes after the attack, it was too late to save him.
The 49-year-old born-again Christian started surfing at the age of 12. After spending the early part of his career surfing, Perry landed a role in the film ‘Blue Crush’ in 2002. He later appeared in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,’ the ‘Magnum, P.I.’ remake show, and dozens of surfing videos.
Perry was currently working as a lifeguard and was well-liked by the local community. He and his wife, Australian bodybuilder Amelia Perry, also ran a business teaching surfing lessons.
Here’s Tamayo Perry explaining one of the biggest waves that he ever accidentally managed to surf through, which was captured on video:
