The narrow majority in the United States Senate is making the 2024 presidential election even more interesting. It is going to be a tightrope for the Democrats to walk, and according to some already writing about it, there’s a focus on whether Sen. Mitt Romney is going to run for the presidency or a second term in the Senate.
Romney is used to battling with Trump, and he has already been willing to go against party lines. This middle-of-the-road position makes Romney believe that he could win a second term easily.
“So I’m convinced that if I run, I win. But that’s a decision I’ll make,” Romney is quoted as saying.
But Romney also said, “But I haven’t made a decision, finally. And probably won’t do that anytime in the immediate future.”
Some think that Romney’s seat in the Senate is not as much of a sure thing as he thinks it is. According to a Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll that was conducted by Dan Jones & Associates, only a few more approve of the senator as those who disapprove. It is 48.9 percent to 46.9 percent.
Looking ahead to 2024, 51.3% of voters in the state say he should definitely or probably not seek a second term, while 47.4% say he definitely or probably should run.
Romney continues to have solid support from Democrats in Utah. The poll found 72.4% of Utahns who identified as Democrats want him to run again.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) wants Romney to run for a second term in the Senate and he is willing to put money behind his candidacy. McConnell said in an interview that he’s “absolutely” willing to support Romney, and is pushing his colleague for another bid.
“He’s been a really important part of our conference. People respect his intelligence, and his assessment of the era we find ourselves in. And I think his running for reelection would be very important,” McConnell said. “It’s important for the Republican Party and the country that he runs again.”
Could it be that Romney’s middle-of-the-road stance in the GOP and his popularity among Democrats would make him electable in the 2024 presidential election?
